10 Steps to Happiness

Throughout my life, I have been led through some extraordinary experiences. I have had some hard lessons, and some that were even harder. I have traveled the world and met some incredible people, good and bad. However, they were the most valuable lessons. During my journey through life and yoga, I have a learned some general philosophies that bring peace of mind, and overall general happiness. There is probably a longer list somewhere, but I think this one is a good one to start with.



1. FORGIVE

Forgive others for the wrong they have done toward you, but most of all, forgive yourself.

Forgive yourself for the mistakes you've made in the past. This will set you free from anger, hate, grudges, resentments, and move on.



2. LET GO OF THE THINGS THAT DO NOT SERVE YOU

Let go of fear- the fear of judgement, the fear of failure, the fear of succeeding, the fear of the work it will take to succeed. Fear disables us from living to our fullest potential.

Let go of drugs, alcohol, toxic relationships, processed food/fast food/junk food, laziness, and negative thoughts and feelings. All of these things are toxic to our bodies.


I could write a whole chapter on each of these alone, but know that each of these things hold you back from living a truly nourished, peaceful, and meaningful life.



3. LET GO OF THE THINGS YOU CAN NOT CONTROL

You can not control other people or what they think of you. The only person you can control is yourself. You can't control external disturbances- the car that rear-ended you, the A/C unit that quit working, how your coworkers treat you, or when you've been laid off from work. You can only control how you respond to it. Make peace with it. Make good decisions and be responsible for yourself.



4. MEDITATE


Don't give anyone the power to disturb your peace. Breathe. Clear your mind. Think positive. Practice mindfulness. Be present.




5. EXERCISE

Endorphins are a chemical that is released in the blood during exercise that are very similar to opioids that relieve pain and stress. It also boosts happy feelings, giving you a natural "high" or a sense of euphoria.

With exercise, you gain confidence with results because you will look and feel better, also making you feel better about yourself, and boosting your self-esteem. Medical issues such as heart disease, diabetes type 2, and other obesity related issues can be reversed with exercise, as well.



6. DO WHAT YOU LOVE, LOVE WHAT YOU DO

No excuses! You set your own limits. Open your mind to all the potential. Anything is possible.


7. LEARN COMPASSION

You never know what others are going through. We all have bad days. Maybe they were just diagnosed with cancer. Maybe they just lost their child in a terrible accident. Maybe they just lost their job and their house, and have their family sleeping in their car. We never know another's pain. You'll never be wrong for doing the right thing, or giving too much. Try to see yourself in others. Be kind, always, especially to yourself. Learn to love yourself. Love others; there is no limit on love. You can never love too much.



8. EDUCATE YOURSELF

Education is priceless. No one can ever take it away. Learn as much as you can about as many things as you can. Be wise.



9. INTROSPECTION

Look inside and be honest with yourself (no judgement). Cultivate and develop healthy self awareness. Learn your character, feelings, motives, and desires.



10. BE YOU

Surround yourself with like-minded people, people who support your ambitions and dreams. People who inspire, motivate, or make you laugh and feel good about yourself. Don't worry about what other people think. Be authentic, and you will attract your tribe.
